Why "The Seahorse Society"

Why the "Seahorse Society"?

The seahorse is a rather unique and special creature. It is part of small family of sea creatures that includes pipefish and sea dragons. This group of animals are the only ones known where it is the male not the female that becomes pregnant. The female deposits her eggs into the male's pouch which has superficial resemblance to a womb. The eggs are then fertilised and hatch in the pouch. When they are mature enough the young are expelled from the pouch with contractions. In other words the male "gives birth" to live young.

Because of this unique characteristic the seahorse has become a symbol in many cultures for gender role reversal. This is largely what transvestites and transsexuals are about. In addition a TV's life as a woman is often restricted to precious fleeting periods. This seems to be summed up the delicate ephemeral quality of the seahorse. So it feels almost natural to call ourselves:

"The Seahorse Society"
